Toddler Program

Ages 18 Months – 3 Years

“The child has a mind able to absorb knowledge. He has the power to teach himself.”

-Dr. Maria Montessori

Description

The Toddler program is designed to support the toddler’s growing awareness and independence. It offers the toddler the opportunity to explore, exercise choice and experience the joy of discovery.

The Prepared Environment

The Montessori Toddler classroom allows the child to function independently in the prepared environment created just for them. It offers a range of activities that are purposeful and sensorial in nature. These activities may include lessons in practical life skills, manipulative materials for eye-hand coordination, gross motor activities and lessons in community living.

The Montessori Toddler Teacher

The Montessori Toddler teacher is calm, patient and trusting. They create and maintain a loving and consistent environment for the toddler to explore. Through observation of the child they offer activities and lessons that will best engage and support the toddler’s emerging independence and mastery of skills.

Unique to This Age of Development

Toddlers are concrete thinkers and explorers. They absorb everything in their environment by watching, listening and manipulating. In this class the child is free to exercise autonomy- in movement, choice of activity, and expression of self. The assurance and independence gained through the work of the Toddler environment will support the child in meeting future challenges with confidence.

Curriculum & Instruction

The main focus of the Toddler curriculum is to meet the developmental needs of each student, particularly in the areas of concentration, language expansion, toilet learning, refinement of movement and socialization. Engagement in these activities begins as collaborative work with the adult in the environment and then moves to the child’s independent work.

Partnering with Parents

Montessori Teachers are trained to guide not only their students but the students’ parents too. They are experts in child development and look to collaborate with parents so as to provide the optimal environment in which the child will flourish.
